PRESENTED BY THE ROAD THEATRE COMPANY

VIRTUAL PLAY READINGS

Carlyle King and Jessica Broutt brought together a group of eleven playwrights, both emerging and established writers, to meet bimonthly to create and workshop new plays. They called it UNDER CONSTRUCTION. Each playwright entered the group with the beginnings of a new play.  The work would be developed collaboratively. This program is modeled for playwrights who would benefit from a structured space to receive feedback from peers, all in the supportive environment of The Road.

About Play-PerView

Play-PerView is an organization that believes in the power of community, and highlights the ways in which artists can support one another both in times of triumph and crisis with love, joy, and innovation in the digital age. Play-PerView programs a variety of one-time-only events—including play readings, monologue nights, panel discussions, and more to provide live-streamed content for audiences who love the experience of live entertainment and, due to the restrictions created by physical distancing practices, can no longer attend in person.

In response to the global pandemic—as well as a desire to bring live theatrical experiences to audiences outside of the major hubs of New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles—this organization will raise funds for organizations such as The Actors Fund, Broadway Cares, non-profit theatres and theatrical unions who are helping to relieve those in need of financial assistance due to job loss, medical bills, and other essential needs.

NOW STREAMING ON HULU

Well before the world knew of the Tony award-winning Broadway musicals Hamilton and In The Heights, Lin-Manuel Miranda was in an improvisational hip-hop group called Freestyle Love Supreme along with director Thomas Kail and performers Christopher Jackson and Anthony Veneziale. Filmmaker Andrew Fried began chronicling the group in the summer of 2005, documenting the early days of Freestyle Love Supreme beatboxing and rapping on the sidewalks—unaware of how their story would unfold. Fourteen years later, Fried captures them reuniting for a series of shows in New York City that led to a triumphant run on Broadway. Both poignant and inspired, We Are Freestyle Love Supreme recalls the creative dreams of youth and why this show still means so much to these accomplished performers.
